About the Work
'My Alter Ego Called Saf' is a sculpture of a black giraffe accompanied by a shadow that stretches across the floor and wall. From a distance, the sculpture shines, but up close, it reveals a rough, unfinished texture, with elements like chicken wire peeking through.
The decision to use black as the sculpture’s sole color draws attention entirely to its form, encouraging an undistracted focus on shape, posture, and structure. As you move around, the relationship between the sculpture and the shadow constantly changes, creating a playful interaction between the two forms. When viewed from a specific spot, the shadow aligns perfectly behind the giraffe.
Nicknamed 'Saf the Giraffe,' the work originated from a great interest for giraffes, and then gradually evolved into a reflection on self and inner contradictions. Representing a young, not fully realized giraffe, the piece captures the clumsiness, shyness, and curiosity of early adulthood.
Standing taller than most viewers, the sculpture’s pitch-black color against a white wall creates a strong contrast that demands attention. Yet, it also feels like observing two shadows, suggesting the feeling of being a passive observer in one’s own life, with the two forms conveying a sense of disconnect with one’s own values and identity. The sculpture thus reflects the struggle between wanting to seek recognition and be visible, while also desiring anonymity and the untouchability that comes with that.
'My Alter Ego Called Saf' marks the start of the journey to let go of inhibitions, embrace individuality, and move forward with a deeper sense of self-assurance.
